We have two types of Sarna (mange) here in San Felipe. This top picture is of Mrs Pai Pai. She comes to us from Campo Pai Pai…hence the name. Henry and Carol Blau, Marilyn Semer and I crawled under the old water tank at Campo Pai Pai and got her puppies out many years ago. She had a male dog with her that was also taken into the shelter. Mrs Pai Pai has what is called Dermatophyte C & s…. commonly called Demo- Dex. This is a non-transmittable form of mange. Because of how she looks and the expense to keep her condition under control she is considered special needs and so far unadoptable. Monthly we’re talking $30 for Ivermectin, $20 for food, $5 for tac and another $10 for special medicated shampoo. That’s $70 a month. Demo-Dex is almost impossible to get rid of once it presents itself. The shelter currently has 4 dogs that are “lifers” due to this condition.
The other type of mange that we run into is the kind that is caused by a very small mite. These dogs clean up really well and if they’re small and cute can be adopted out. Otherwise they are returned to their owners or back to the location where they were found. What typically happens is the dogs start to show signs of mange mite infestation and they are put out of their house. This type of mange is transmittable to humans and to other animals. The actual cost of the medication required is fairly inexpensive…..30 mls of Ivermectin is $28 right here in town. But this is beyond the means of most local families. Really bad cases like you see in the photos above are taken into Las Minitas for treatment, run through protocol, spayed or neutered, fed…etc etc….cost for 5 or 6 week treatment program runs about $130 to $140 per dog.

| There are also two street programs in place. One run by Elena down in the center of San Felipe and one I do here at the Eijido Plan National Agrario.. This picture is of a little fellow outside a store in the EPNA. I dose him with Ivermectin once a week….I hide it in a hot dog piece so he comes running when he sees my car. Cost for these street programs is variable depending on finding the cases to treat. The in-town program treats many many more cases than I do at EPNA. |
