Our
Palapa Project
May

…Could
not wait to share this story
and photos with you. About 6
weeks ago we began to raise
money to erect permanent shade
structures for our site dogs
in Las Minitas. The site and
clinic are in the desert and
get extremely hot and humid
during the summer months. We
raised nearly $2000 online thru
an email campaign called PALAPA
PROJECT that so many of you
donated to.
An additional donation of $3800
from ARF (a local fundraising
group) paid for PHASE ONE in
its entirety.
The humungous structure pictured
here measures a whopping 58'x62'
with an equal size shade cloth
on top. It was donated by San
Felipe’s premiere realtor
and developer PLAYA de ORO.
Transport and re-erection costs,
including crew, trucks and equipment
ran $3800—thanks to ARF
for funding this. Our dogs are
soooooo appreciative!
PHASE TWO is a metal shade
roof that will cover all existing
outdoor kennels and runs. PHASE
TWO will begin as early as next
week (5/14/2007). We still need
more $$ support, so please keep
donating when and if you can.

“PROJECT PALAPA”
OFFERS RELIEF to DOGS in HOT
DESERT SUN
Here
in San Felipe the hot summer
weather is oppresive to dogs
and cats who not only struggle
to find drinkable water, but
have to hide under cars or vans,
in dark dank basements or construction
sites to get shelter from 100
degree+ heat and matching humidity.
At the San Felipe Animal Rescue
site in the desert of Las Minitas
our plan is to erect a series
of Mexican style shade PALAPAS
and replace older, wind battered
shade tarps that have been destroyed
over the winter.
You might recall that in January
of 2006, an arsonist burned
our clinic to the ground–the
fire incinerated everything
in its path, turning all our
supplies and meds and the entire
structure into ashes.
We’ve just completed
a $100,000 two story rebuild,
but are looking for additional
help to accomplish “PROJECT
PALAPA”. Estimates of
$8500-$10,000 guarantee an incredible
result, and the completed project
will provide better quality
of life to all our dogs who
live here.
San Felipe is a poor fishing
village where everything that
happens to improve quality of
life for its people and its
animals is almost always privately
funded.
As you can see by the photo
above our kennels and outside
runs are exposed to the hot
sun and high humidity. Extreme
desert winds blow our shade
tarps away as soon as we put
them up. This project will provide
sturdy PALAPAS like this one
which are very secure and far
cooler for the dogs.
